How Do I Know My Locks Need To Be Changed?

One of the most important things you can do to keep your home safe is to regularly change your locks. While it might seem like a hassle, it's a simple and effective way to deter burglars.

Here are a few signs that it might be time for you to change your locks:

  • You've recently moved into a new home. While the previous occupants may have been trustworthy, you don't know who else might have a key.

  • You've had a break-in attempt. Even if the burglars weren't successful, they might have made a copy of your key.

  • You've lost your keys. If you can't find them, there's no telling who might have picked them up.

  • It's been a while since you've changed your locks. Just like with anything else, regular maintenance is important.

If you notice any of these signs, don't delay in changing your locks. It's one of the best ways to keep your home safe and secure.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What’s the difference between rekeying and changing a lock?

Changing a lock refers to your locksmith simply replacing the current lock on your door with a new one.

Rekeying, however, is slightly different - the lock is taken apart and some of its parts are replaced, such as the key pins and tumblers.

This means the old keys will no longer work and new ones will be made. It essentially alters your lock’s mechanism rather than replacing it altogether.

  • Should I change my locks or rekey them?

Rekeying is usually cheaper, so this tends to be the preferred option for most people if they lose their keys.

However, there are certain situations where changing the lock entirely may be necessary, such as when your current lock is damaged, old or worn out, as this can present a safety issue.

  • Can a locksmith gain access to my property without needing to replace the lock?

In the majority of cases, yes, a locksmith can gain entry to a property without having to replace the lock.

Most expert locksmiths can carry out non-destructive entry techniques, such as picking, with relative ease.

With our emergency services, Coast 2 Coast Locksmiths can grant you access to your home as soon as possible.

So if you've accidentally locked yourself out or you return home from a trip and realise you've misplaced your keys, we will be there as soon as we can to get you back into the safety and comfort of your home.

  • Is there a way to make my home safer?

If you’re worried about the security of your house and want to prevent any breaches, you could ask a locksmith to install a deadbolt.

A deadbolt makes it harder for someone to force entry into your home as it's not easily battered or bored. Adding a deadbolt could give you the peace of mind you need as they are one of the most secure lock types available.

Coast 2 Coast Locksmiths offers deadbolt installation services, so if you want to enhance your home’s safety, get in touch with us to arrange an appointment.

  • Can a locksmith make a new key without the original?

Yes, a locksmith can make a new key without having the original.

This can be done in many ways:

    • Taking an impression of the lock – using the existing lock, they'll make an impression and use this to cut a new key.
    • Disassembly – this requires them to take the lock apart to discover the keycode and then use that to create a new key.
    • Cutting the key – there are two types of key codes: biting and blind. These codes are allocated to different models of keys and locks. A locksmith will create a new key by matching it to the specified code.
  • Can a locksmith cut car keys?

Yes, a locksmith can cut car keys. Most locksmiths can cut and create a replacement set of car keys for a much lower cost than a car dealer will charge you.

To do this, they just need the following information:

    • Make of the car
    • Model of the car
    • It's year of production
    • Proof of ownership of the vehicle

If your car keys have been stolen, make sure to let your locksmith know, as they can reprogram your car to make sure the stolen keys no longer work. Coast 2 Coast Locksmiths also offers a mobile automotive service.

So, if you have any trouble accessing your car, we can come to your location as soon as possible.
